An elderly Georgia couple tells Local 10 News they have been ripped off. They paid a South Florida car dealership $15,000 for a hard-to-find Lexus. And while the dealer cashed the check weeks ago, they have no car and no answers.
Monroe County K9 busts 3 more for drugs during traffic stop
BIG PINE KEY, Fla. – Just days after helping bust a woman for drug possession in the Florida Keys, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office K9 Coral is at it again. This time she alerted deputies to drugs inside a Lexus and a BMW that were pulled over Monday afternoon on Big Pine Key. (Monroe County Sheriff's Office)According to authorities, deputies spotted Howard driving a black BMW south on U.S. 1 around 2:40 p.m. Monday. (Monroe County Sheriff's Office)Dyer is Howard’s boyfriend, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities said additional deputies were called to the scene along with K9 Coral, who alerted them to drugs in the Lexus and BMW.
Mazda No. 1 in Consumer Reports 2020 auto reliability survey
DETROIT – Mazda beat traditional winners Lexus and Toyota to win top honors as the most dependable auto brand in Consumer Reports' annual reliability survey. Mazda took top honors for the first time in the survey, which this year included Consumer Reports organization members who own more than 300,000 vehicles from model years 2000 to 2020. Consumer Reports said that the Ford Explorer SUV, redesigned for the 2020 model year, is among the lowest-scoring models of any manufacturer with transmission, electronic, and engine issues. Only the company's Model 3 small car was rated as reliable and recommended by Consumer Reports. Nearly half of the new models have much worse than average reliability, Consumer Reports said.
Traffic stop turns into deadly deputy-involved shooting in Dania Beach
DANIA BEACH, Fla. – A man armed with a gun was killed in a deputy-involved shooting Monday morning, the Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed. BSO says it began as a traffic stop on a silver Lexus with a suspected stolen tag just before 11 a.m. at 1900 Stirling Road in Dania Beach. The man in that car fled and crossed Stirling to where a group of hotels are located in the 160 block of Southwest 19th Court, investigators say. Deputies ran after him, and the armed suspect was shot, BSO said. Sky 10 was over the scene in the parking lot of a Home2 Suites by Hilton, just north of Stirling Road and west of I-95.
Toyota adds 1.5M US vehicles to recalls for engine stalling
DETROIT – Toyota is adding 1.5 million U.S. vehicles to recalls from early this year to fix fuel pumps that can fail and cause engines to stall. The company says the latest recall brings the total to 5.8 million Toyota and Lexus brand vehicles that need to be repaired worldwide. The recall affects more than 40 vehicles in the U.S. dating to the 2013 model year, covering much of the Toyota and Lexus model lineup. Toyota said in a statement Wednesday that the fuel pumps can suddenly stop operating, and that can cause the vehicles to stall. Toyota began recalling the vehicles in January with about 700,000, and added 1.2 million in March.
Burglars in skull masks tie up woman, ransack home in Tamarac
They were both dressed in black and wearing skull masks. A woman told deputies the two burglars terrorized her Monday morning in Tamarac. Surveillance video shows the burglars caught her by surprise as she walked toward her car outside her home around 9 a.m. near the intersection of Northwest 57th Street and Woodlands Boulevard. Surveillance video later shows a woman wearing a dark-colored hair wrap and dark-colored clothing opening the front door, saying something in Creole and then closing the door. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the burglars to call BSO Robbery Detective Robert Sokol at 954-321-4547.
FBI continues searching Broward landfill following young mother’s disappearance
BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – The search has resumed for a missing mother after her child was found wandering alone in Miramar. Leila Cavett, 21, hasn’t been seen since July and the search for her is now focused on a landfill in northwest Broward. FBI agents continued searching through a landfill Monday, sifting through debris in hopes of finding something that will give them answers as to what happened to Cavett. The Georgia mother was last seen July 25 at a RaceTrac gas station off Hollywood Boulevard and State Road 7. A gas station employee also told police they spotted children’s toys and women’s clothing back there, as well.
Missing mom Leila Cavett investigation leads FBI to landfill
FBI spokesman James Marshall confirmed the canvassing is part of the investigation into missing mother Leila Cavett. Cavett, 21, was last seen July 25 in surveillance images from a RaceTrac gas station on Hollywood Boulevard near State Road 7. According to authorities, an employee at the gas station said they saw Ryan using the dumpster but that was nearly a month after Cavett’s disappearance. According to the court documents, surveillance video did not show Cavett leaving in a dark sedan. The FBI still considers Cavett as a missing person at this time.
Woman rescued from submerged SUV that crashed into Miami Gardens canal
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - A 69-year-old woman is in critical condition after she was pulled from a Lexus SUV that was submerged in a canal Sunday afternoon in Miami Gardens. Camacho said the Lexus then crashed into a chain-link fence, collided with a black Hyundai and plummeted into the canal. Camacho said two state troopers, a Miami-Dade police officer and a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue diver all went into the water and helped free the woman. Rudy Regis said he was nearby and heard the crash, but a passerby pointed him to where the SUV had gone into the water. "At that point, that's when the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue diver went in."
Suspect arrested in hit-and-run crash at Miami bus stop
MIAMI - Police have arrested a man accused in a hit-and-run crash at a Miami bus stop that injured a 63-year-old man. Rodrigo Delatorre, 36, faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash causing property damage and leaving the scene of a crash causing serious bodily injury. The crash occurred Wednesday afternoon at a bus stop near Northwest Seventh Avenue and Northwest 58th Street. According to a Miami police report, Delatorre was driving a Lexus when it drove onto the sidewalk and struck the victim who was sitting on a bench at the bus stop. "Inventory of the car shows 104 used whippet cartridges and eight unused cartridges," a prosecutor said in court Thursday.
Police take down suspect found sitting in Lexus stolen during carjacking
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Police have apprehended a man who was driving a car reported stolen during an armed carjacking earlier in the day. Officers found an armed man sitting in the car. Officers swarmed the car and took the suspect into custody. A records check revealed that the car had been stolen during a carjacking. Zabaleta said the suspect was not cooperating with police.
Deputies search for car stolen from Weston residents
WESTON, Fla. – Police officers believe a group of teenagers in a Lexus sneaked into a gated community known as the Islands at Weston to spread mischief early Wednesday morning. It was about 4 a.m., when police officers said the teens broke into several cars and stole one. Residents on Camellia Lane and Camellia Circle in Weston woke up to about 13 vehicles burglarized. Surveillance video showed a car thief took a Ford Explorer that had been parked on Camellia Circle. Patricia Bernardini, whose relative owned the stolen car, said she learned a lesson and she had some advise: "Lock your cars."
