South Florida men get prison time for poaching protected sea turtle eggs

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. – Two South Florida men have been sentenced to federal prison for stealing 93 protected sea turtle eggs. Court records show Carl Lawrence Cobb received nine months earlier this week in West Palm Beach federal court, while Bruce Wayne Bivins received seven months last month. A criminal complaint says Cobb dropped Bivins off at the Singer Island Beach, just north of Palm Beach, one night last May. Florida wildlife officers say they spotted Bivins taking the eggs and then recovered them after stopping Cobb’s truck.
Viewing held for high school football player gunned down outside church
Terrance Jackson, Jr., was a rising football star, a sophomore at Deerfield Beach High School. On Feb. 2, Jackson attended his grandfather’s funeral before a gunman killed him outside of Victory City Church, 163 W. 20 St., in Riviera Beach. Bryce Gowdy, whose Dec. 30th death was ruled a suicide, was a Deerfield Beach High School football player who had been recruited by Georgia Tech and was supposed to be on campus on Jan. 6. Deerfield Beach high school football coach, Jevon Glenn, was in Auburn, Alabama, for a college tour with Jackson’s teammates when he learned of the tragedy. Glenn said that the high school player had passed up the team trip to attend the funeral.
Teenage boy’s shooting death prompts talk in Deerfield Beach about need to stop gun violence
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – Terrance “TeeJay” Jackson would have celebrated his 16th birthday on Wednesday. Instead, his mother, Tronicia Jackson, and his father, Terrance Jackson Sr., were attending a vigil to mourn their son. On Thursday, the teenage boy’s murder was at the heart of a group discussion about gun violence at the Dr. Leo J. Robb, Jr. Memorial Gymnasium in Deerfield Beach. The sophomore died in his mother’s arms across the street from the Victory City Church in Riviera Beach. The Riviera Beach Police Department is still investigating the fatal shooting.
South Florida teacher arrested after knocking out boy’s tooth, police say
RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. – A South Florida teacher was arrested Friday after she pushed a first-grade student so hard against a wall that his tooth fell out, police said. Cynthia Smith, 64, of West Palm Beach, faces a child abuse charge after the Jan. 30 incident at Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School in Riviera Beach. The impact caused the boy to lose a tooth and gave him a busted lip. Several students told police that Smith is "mean" to them, and one student said Smith "yells at her for no reason." Smith was released from jail the next day on a $3,000 bond.

2 killed, 1 injured in shooting at Riviera Beach church after funeral service
RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. – Two people were killed and two others were injured Saturday afternoon at a Riviera Beach church after a funeral service. The shooting was reported around 2:30 p.m. at Victory City Church at 163 W. 20th St.Riviera Beach police confirmed that a 15-year-old boy and a man were pronounced dead at the scene. Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line sends ship on humanitarian mission
PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - Deerfield Beach-based Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line sent a ship on a humanitarian mission to Freeport on Thursday. The Grand Celebration departed from the Port of Palm Beach in Riviera Beach to Freeport in Grand Bahama Island. The Grand Celebration will also be helping Bahamians who have proper documentation to evacuate to the United States. The ship is scheduled to return to the Port of Palm Beach on Friday. The cruise line was accepting donations at the company's warehouse at 301 Broadway Ave., Bay #7, in Riviera Beach.
