SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – A social studies teacher at a Southwest Miami-Dade high school is accused of having a romantic relationship with a student, which has led to his arrest and his being fired by the school district. Miami-Dade Schools Police Department arrested Rafael Birriel, 39, a teacher at Coral Reef Senior High School following an investigation into improper behavior, which involved a student. The school district said that Birriel had no other issues in his 13 years of employment with Miami-Dade Public Schools. The victim told police that most of the conversations she had with the teacher were through the messaging app, Discord. AdOver the course of the year, police said Birriel told the girl he loved her as well as his sexual attraction and intentions toward her.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – A pick-up truck with one person inside ended up pinned underneath a semi-truck Sunday afternoon, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. The accident happened at approximately 4:45 p.m. near Southwest 88 Street and Krome Avenue. According to fire rescue, the driver was trapped inside and had to be extricated from the pinned truck. The cause of the accident and the driver’s condition is not known at this time.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI DADE, Fla. – A small plane was forced to land on Krome Avenue in Southwest Miami-Dade County. It happened Saturday afternoon approximately 1.5 miles west of Miami Executive Airport, also known as Tamiami Airport. According to the Federal Aviation Association (FAA) who is investigating the incident, the plane is a single-engine Piper J-5A. Police blocked off parts of Krome Avenue after the plane ended up in the northbound lanes. Officers from the Miami-Dade Police Department and Florida State Troopers were at the scene after the plane landed.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – The day after a shootout during rush hour in Southwest Miami Dade, police said surveillance video from a nearby café is serving as a key component in the investigation. That’s when shots were fired from an SUV into a white BMW sedan. On the video, the passenger doors of the SUV open and gunfire can be seen hitting the sedan. SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – A large police perimeter was set up in Southwest Miami Dade after a police chase and crash around 10:40 a.m. Friday. Florida Highway Patrol said the incident started on the Florida Turnpike in the area of Southwest 112 Avenue when a trooper tried to stop a reckless driver who sped away. People said they saw the men knocking on doors at the South Pointe Apartments and called police. Law enforcement set up a perimeter and both men were caught shortly after.

The FBI released photographs from the robbery that took place at approximately 1:30 p.m. at a Chase Bank branch located at 13745 Southwest 152 St. According to the FBI, there were customers in the bank at the time of the robbery, but there were no injuries. The amount of money taken was not released. Anyone with information is urged to call the FBI at (754) 703-2000.

Doctors say Zane Wampler of Tavernier has multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C), an illness associated with having COVID-19. After days of no improvement, convulsions, and delusions, Wampler said the family then rushed Zane to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. ”In Miami-Dade, 301 cases of COVID-19 cases and 218 cases of COVID-19 cases in Broward county were counted in patients 18 and younger on Friday. Doctors at Nicklaus Children's Hospital said it is very common for kids to have COVID-19, but to not have any symptoms at all.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 3-year-old boy died Friday near Homestead after the driver of a Dodge Charger lost control and crashed into a Valentine’s Day vendor’s tent, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Witnesses said the boy was with his mother, who was selling Valentine’s Day gifts, when the driver of the Charger was speeding out of the Spitzer Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Homestead. The car was traveling north on U.S. Highway 1 when it crashed into the tent set up across the street. The man who was driving the car with a woman as a passenger remained at the scene of the crash. The boy was airlifted by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to Kendall Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
