The next expansion in eligibility for the vaccine, he said, will be 55 and older. DeSantis said that for every five-year age expansion in eligibility for the vaccine, the state is looking at about 1.8 or 1.9 million more people. DeSantis said he decided to expand the eligibility after recording that almost 60% of seniors in Florida had received the vaccine. He expects 1,000 seniors a day to receive the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

MIAMI – Officers surrounded Jackson Memorial Hospital on Friday afternoon after an inmate who was thought to be wearing a hospital gown attempted to escape. The inmate identified as Jermaine Henderson was supposed to be taking a shower before scheduled surgery when he escaped through the ceiling of the bathroom, police said. Heavily armed Miami police officers surrounded the Jackson Memorial Hospital on Friday. Miami Fire Rescue personnel used a stretcher to return Henderson to the hospital. Miami Fire Rescue personnel returned an inmate to the hospital after his attempt to escape on Friday failed.

AVENTURA, Fla. – Police officers closed streets and a public park during a standoff with a man who refused to come out of an apartment on Friday afternoon in Aventura. Officers closed Founders Park at 3105 NE 190th St. They also redirected traffic on West Country Club Drive from the William Lehman Causeway to 190th Street. A SWAT team focused on a third-floor unit at Camden Aventura Apartments at 3100 NE 190 St. The man walked out of the apartment building in handcuffs about 5:25 p.m. and no one was injured, police said.

Officers evacuated areas at the Metromover stops for Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus at 300 NE Second Ave., and Bayside Marketplace at 401 Biscayne Blvd. According to Officer Kiara Delva, a spokeswoman for the Miami-Dade Police Department, the officers were still investigating the source of the threats. Deputies were searching for the gunman after his girlfriend called 911 asking for help in the area of Southwest 32nd Terrace near the Oakridge neighborhood. Deputies found the domestic violence suspect there and reported he refused to put down his weapon. “I just saw somebody laying in the middle of the street,” Gomes said, adding he also saw Fire Rescue personnel take him on a stretcher. NORTH BAY VILLAGE, Fla. – North Bay Village Commissioner Andreana Jackson resigned on Wednesday after admitting to using an educational event funded by local business owners to earn a consultancy fee. She managed to earn a $2,950 consultancy fee for hiring Melissa Frantz as an event planner, prosecutors said. Jackson pleaded guilty to charges of extortion by officers of the state, a first-degree misdemeanor, and exploitation of official position, a second-degree misdemeanor. Prosecutors ordered Jackson to stay away from running for public office for a year and to pay a $3,950 fine ― the return of the $2,950 consultancy fee and $1,000 to cover investigation costs. “The prospect of a public official soliciting funds to benefit school children and pocketing a portion as a commissioner is both wrong and offensive,” Miami-Dade County State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said.
