PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – On Monday the House of Representatives is scheduled to deliver to the Senate the Article of Impeachment charging now-former President Donald Trump with inciting an insurrection. Congress faces that upcoming trial as it works with a new president, new goals and a new plan to overcome the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the former president’s staunchest supporters in South Florida is Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, a Republican representing southern Miami-Dade County and the Southwest Florida coast. He joined This Week in South Florida hosts Glenna Milberg and Michael Putney, and their discussion can be seen at the top of this page.

He was convicted in April 2017 on 67 counts, including health care fraud, submitting false claims and falsifying patient records. A White House statement credited Menendez with supporting clemency for Melgen, who was a donor to Democratic politicians and a longtime friend of the Cuban-American New Jersey senator. In a statement of his own, Menendez said he did very little on Melgen’s behalf and did not expect the clemency decision from Trump. “I don’t pretend to know what motivates President Trump to act, but I am pretty sure it’s not me,” Menendez said. A federal jury in New Jersey failed to reach a verdict on charges that Melgen used his relationship to bribe Menendez.

“Mob violence goes against everything I believe in and everything our movement stands for. No true supporter of mine could ever endorse political violence,” Trump said. When it comes to South Florida’s Congressional delegation and the historical second impeachment of Trump, they voted along party lines – every Democrat from South Florida voting to impeach Trump, Republicans voting nay. 232 Democrats voting in the impeachment article, “Incitement of Insurrection,” and just 10 Republicans voting along with them. Officers were left screaming for help and one officer was killed after Trump sent a riotous mob straight to the Capitol.

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – This week’s chaos at The Capitol is under layers of investigation. 147 members of Congress, all Republicans, voted to reject electors in Arizona and Pennsylvania, which would effectively have disenfranchised millions of voters. Among those voting to decertify were Florida Senator Rick Scott and Miami Congressmen Mario Diaz-Balart and Carlos Gimenez. Only Gimenez accepted Local 10′s invitation to join This Week in South Florida, but he cancelled the morning of the show citing a medical emergency. Rep. Ted Deutch, a Democrat from Boca Raton who represents Florida’s 22nd Congressional District, did join TWISF to discuss the week’s events, and their conversation can be seen at the top of this page.

And, in fact, the Trump campaign Friday dropped its legal challenge to the vote results in Arizona, which President-elect Joe Biden won. — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 13, 2020Miami Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, a Republican re-elected without opposition, is totally behind the president. “We should let the legal and vote counting process continue, let the states certify their results,” he said. Gimenez says Biden should get the daily intelligence briefings, but that Trump doesn’t need to concede until all the votes are counted.

MIAMI – The death of Fidel Castro was cause for celebration for citizens of South Florida, including community, county and city leaders who shared their thoughts on the passing of the former Cuban dictator. In a joint media conference Saturday Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Rep. Carlos Curbelo, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart and former Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart, spoke about Castro, who died at 90, and political prisoners on the communist Caribbean island nation. "The only thing that Fidel Castro has been successful at is staying power, period," she said. Mario Diaz-Balart spoke about the families that were displaced and people who were hurt under the Castro government. He said nature "took care" of Castro and will soon "take care" of his 85-year-old brother Raul Castro, who took over as Cuba's leader a decade ago.
