Two Miami-Dade municipalities – Coral Gables and Miami Shores – held elections Tuesday.

Elections were held Tuesday, March 11, across several cities in Broward County.

Republican Florida U.S. Sen. Rick Scott celebrated a victory over his Democratic opponent, former U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, on Tuesday night in Bonita Springs with more than 56% of the votes.

Amendment 3 -- one of two amendments on the ballot put there by citizens, not lawmakers (the other being Amendment 4) -- failed Tuesday. If it had passed, recreational marijuana would be legal in Florida for adults over 21.

Amendment 4 failed Tuesday, despite the majority of Florida voters saying “yes” on the ballot. A 60% supermajority vote is required to pass an amendment and only 57% voted yes.

The race for Broward County Sheriff has been a tight race between incumbent Gregory Tony and challenger Charles Edward Whatley.

The first election for a sheriff in Miami-Dade County in more than six decades came down to two candidates.

Florida voters made decisions on Nov 5 about two citizen-initiated amendments on marijuana and abortion and four legislatively-referred amendments.

While we may not know if President Donald Trump or former Vice President Joe Biden won the presidential election for a while longer, there was one clear “winner” on election night, and that was recreational drugs. States across the country have been legalizing recreational marijuana every election cycle, and 2020 was no different. Residents in New Jersey, Arizona, Montana and South Dakota all voted to legalize recreational cannabis, and South Dakota also legalized medical marijuana, along with Mississippi. South Dakota became the first state to legalize medical and recreational marijuana in the same election. For the first time in U.S. history, the state of Oregon decriminalized possession of hard drugs, as well as voted to legalize psychedelic mushrooms.

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Mayors in two cities in northeast Broward County and one in southern Broward County will keep their posts after results of Tuesday’s election. With all six precincts reporting, Troast had 1,832 votes while Marshall had 793 votes. With 2 out of 2 precincts reporting, Vincent received 1,193 votes to Graziano’s 438 votes. With 51 precincts reporting, Ortis had 12,810 votes while Castillo garnered 10,412 votes. With 13 of 13 precincts reporting, Schwartz won with 3,206 votes to O’Loughlin’s 2,153.

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – In Lauderdale-By-The Sea, Mayor Chris Vincent won over John Graziano. With 2 out of 2 precincts reporting, Vincent received 1,193 votes to Graziano’s 438 votes.

Renew flexible funding for Monroe County schools: The District’s objective is to continue to make available a portion of the existing capital ad valorem tax levy for the operations -- such as teachers, school nurses and classroom materials. The District intends to continue its reduced millage for capital projects, and continue to make available the equivalent amount for operations. Shall the district continue to enact a yearly ad valorem tax of .5 mill, for four years beginning July 1, 2020, for operating purposes?

Amendment 1: Change municipal election dates, extend current terms: Shall Section 6 of the charter of the City of Pompano Beach be amended to transition all future municipal elections to the second Tuesday of March by moving the next scheduled municipal general election in November of 2020 to March of 2021 and by extending the current terms of the mayor and commissioners from November of 2020 to March of 2021 in order to accommodate that change? Amendment 2: Expand district commissioner terms of office: Shall Section 6 of the charter of the City of Pompano Beach be amended to provide for election of district commissioners to a term of four years from the current two-year term? Amendment 3: Stagger terms: Shall Section 6 of the charter of the City of Pompano Beach be amended to stagger election years for commissioners by providing the terms of office for elected commissioners from odd numbered districts at the next scheduled municipal election be for an initial term of three years and then with equal terms of office for all commissioners in future elections?
