Together the two impeachment trials Trump faced illustrated his ability to escape consequences for actions that even many Republicans denounced. If Trump chooses to run for the White House in 2024, opponents are likely to call on a constitutional provision adopted after the Civil War to try to stop him. Ratified in 1868, the language in Section 3 of the amendment was aimed at former Confederate civilian and military leaders. The section doesn't explicitly mention the presidency, but Magliocca is among legal scholars who believe Trump could be barred. It was updated on Feb. 19, 2021, to correct the name of the law professor to Gerard Magliocca, not Gerald Magliocca.

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Debbie Wasserman Schultz has won reelection in Florida 23rd Congressional District, retaining her seat in the House of Representatives. “To be elected to a ninth term fills my heart,” Wasserman Schultz, 54, said Tuesday night. “I’m looking forward to going back to Washington and fighting for the issues that matter to my constituents. Wasserman Schultz, who was first elected to Congress in 2004, serves on the House’s Committee on Appropriations and Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Her opponent, Republican Carla Spalding, was attempting to use the incumbent’s experience against her, campaigning that Wasserman Schultz is “the definition of a career politician” who doesn’t relate with everyday people in the community.

“For me to only be up six, I'm a little bit concerned,” he asserted. Trump backed out of plans for the originally scheduled presidential faceoff after debate organizers shifted the format to a virtual event following Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis. After being sidelined by the coronavirus, Trump resumed a breakneck schedule this week, with aides saying he is expected to travel and host campaign rallies every day through Nov. 3. His trip to Iowa comes as the state this week surpassed 100,000 coronavirus cases and has seen a recent surge in hospitalizations. Officials at the Des Moines airport were told to plan for up to 10,000 people, and such Trump campaign events typically feature little to no social distancing and only spot mask wearing.

Ron DeSantis extended the state’s voter registration deadline Tuesday after he said heavy traffic crashed the state’s online system and potentially prevented thousands of enrolling to cast ballots in next month’s presidential election. In addition to online registration, DeSantis ordered elections, motor vehicle and tax collectors offices to stay open until that hour for anyone who wanted to register in person. The volume of requests that overwhelmed the Florida registration site Monday was not consistent with denial-of-service attacks, which typically render websites unavailable with barrages of several hundred million requests per second. Sarah Dinkins, a Florida State University student, tried to help her younger sister register Monday night. Ron DeSantis in allowing the state’s voter registration website to crash on the very last day to register for the upcoming November election is, sadly, completely believable,” U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz said.

AVENTURA, Fla. – Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz said Thursday that she is concerned about white supremacists and militia groups that support President Donald Trump’s reelection. Wasserman Schultz said this heightened after Trump was given the opportunity to condemn them and instead addressed a right-wing extremist group and said, “Stand back and stand by.” The group’s online presence has carved out a niche as a volunteer security force for the GOP. “Trump is assembling what could be potential poll-watching patrols who are known for white supremacy and violence,” Wasserman Schultz said. Broward County Elections Department said this is part of their guidelines, which haven’t changed. Trump should be asked again to condemn white supremacy and anti-semitic, racism and he should be asked to tell his supporters to be peaceful and to not interfere with elections,” Deutch said.

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court is declining to revive a lawsuit by supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders who sued the Democratic National Committee in 2016 over claims officials improperly tipped the scales for Hillary Clinton during the nominating process. The justices said Monday they would not take up the lawsuit. As is usual the court did not comment in turning away the case. The lawsuit was filed after leaked DNC emails suggested Democratic party officials had favored Clinton over the Vermont senator during the primaries. The lawsuit by Sanders supporters was dismissed at an early stage and an appeals court had upheld the dismissal.

Ron DeSantis on Thursday for a lack of transparency as the state reopens during the coronavirus pandemic. “The common thread here with DeSantis is callousness, indifference and a lack of candor,” U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz said. According to the U.S. Labor Department, Floridians filed 223,927 jobless claims last week, after 223,082 were filed the week before. Only California and New York had more new claims filed last week than Florida. The state’s tourism industry has been hardest hit, with almost a quarter of the workers who’ve filed jobless claims coming from that industry.

House Democratic leaders abruptly reversed course Tuesday, shelving plans for the chamber's 400-plus lawmakers to return for work on the next virus aid package after warnings from the Capitol physician that the public health danger was too great. “If the House physician recommends that we not come back, then we have to take that guidance.”It's not just the elected officials at risk. The Capitol physician has privately warned key lawmakers it will be at least a year before Congress can return to business as usual. A bipartisan House task force agreed to have committees test-drive technology options with public round-table meetings in the days ahead. But House Republicans argued the House should return to work and panned a more ambitious proposal for proxy voting that was shelved last week so talks could continue.

During a news conference Thursday in Weston, Wasserman Schultz told Venezuelan American activists that Scott's commitment to help Venezuelans "is totally disingenuous." Wasserman Schultz and Pelosi blasted Scott for tying Venezuelans' TPS to a new requirement for review of all migrants TPS cases every 18 months. Trump doesn't need congressional approval to grant Venezuelans TPS. On the Senate floor, Scott said, "the courts have basically made a temporary program permanent, which is not sustainable.
