Ron DeSantis said Friday that less than 50% of young people in Florida will opt for a COVID-19 vaccine when he expands access to all in April. Hialeah man who fled to Panama after killing pedestrian arrested
MIAMI SPRINGS, Fla. – A Hialeah man who fled to Panama after his involvement in two car crashes, one killing a pedestrian, was captured while on his way to Cuba, investigators said Friday. The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office and Miami Springs police said that Eddy Enrique Nuñez, 54, was involved in a three-car accident on Jan. 4, 2020, then fled that scene in Miami Springs. After leaving that scene, he crashed a few blocks away after losing control of his car and then ran over a pedestrian. Miami Springs police said Nuñez dragged Tracy Berry, 43, under his car for several blocks, killing her. Nuñez is charged with vehicular homicide and is being held in Miami-Dade County’s Turner Guilford Knight Correction Center on a $15,000 bond.
FPL moves hundreds of overhead power lines underground as part of pilot program
MIAMI SPRINGS, Fla. – As of Thursday, Florida Power & Light Co. had 53 miles of overhead power lines underground. FPL estimates that between 300 and 700 power lines will be placed underground annually from 2021 to 2023. Berlot said neighborhood power lines are chosen for the program based on past hurricane outage performance, a history of vegetation-related interruptions, and other reliability factors. Trees and vegetation coming in contact with overhead lines were the leading cause of outages during Hurricane Irma in 2017. Bertot said underground lines showed about 83% better performance as opposed to overhead.

FDOH: Miami-Dade has state’s 2 most deadly long-term care facilities during coronavirus pandemic
HIALEAH, Fla. – Fair Havens Center in Miami Springs and Signature Healthcare Center Of Waterford in Hialeah remain the long-term care facilities with the most deaths during the coronavirus pandemic in Florida, according to state records Sunday morning. According to the Florida Department of Health’s latest review of long-term care facility deaths associated with COVID-19, Fair Havens Center reported 44 residents died and the Signature HealthCARE Center Of Waterford reported 33 residents died. A spokeswoman for Signature HealthCARE of Waterford, however, told Local 10 News in an email Monday that the report was incorrect and 23 residents had died. At Signature HealthCARE Center Of Waterford, 60 more staff tested positive for the coronavirus, 23 more residents tested positive and 32 more residents were transferred out, state health officials reported. The agency reports on deaths weekly and releases the report on deaths on Friday night.
Authorities rescue woman, 21, from accused sex trafficker in Miami Springs

Authorities said she checked into a motel in Miami Springs the night of May 4 and was approached by Gregory Sutton, 33, the next morning. The victim told authorities that Sutton solicited her to commit acts of prostitution and told her he would organize everything. The victim, who said she did not want to engage in prostitution, told police that she locked herself in her motel room and called a friend, who then contacted the Miami Springs Police Department. The State Attorney’s Office said a joint operation then commenced, leading to Sutton’s arrest and the safe rescue of the victim.
Miami Springs nursing home residents transferred to hospital
MIAMI SPRINGS, Fla. – Dozens of residents of a Miami Springs nursing home were loaded into ambulances Sunday. Eight Fair Havens’ residents have died from COVID-19, according to the department of health. Department of Health statistics show that Fair Havens Center has transferred 32 positive residents; 58 residents who have tested positive remain at the facility and 38 staff members have tested positive for the coronavirus. Lázaro Guas, whose mother was one of the people transferred Sunday, told Local 10 that his mother tested positive for the virus, but she has yet to show any symptoms. "She doesn't have a fever, she doesn't have any symptoms; just that she has tested positive.

Officer involved in Miami Springs crash
MIAMI SPRINGS, Fla. - A police vehicle was involved in a crash Thursday evening in Miami Springs. The crash involving two vehicles occurred near La Baron and Minola drives. Local 10 News has learned the officer and the driver of the other vehicle were transported with non-life-threatening injuries. The cause of the accident is under investigation. 3 people treated after fire reported at Miami Springs hotel
MIAMI SPRINGS, Fla. - Three people were hospitalized after a fire broke out Monday afternoon at a hotel in Miami Springs. I guess a room was on fire or something," hotel guest Tyler Anderson said. "They were able to quickly knock down the majority of the fire, but there was extensive smoke damage throughout the building," Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Lt. Kirsten Miller said. Authorities said two people from the hotel and one firefighter were taken to the hospital. Authorities said they suffered smoke inhalation and other issues.
